Photo 20 Feb 3 notes for our first full day in phnom penh, we opted to go to S21, the site of the majority of the anti-rebellion interrogations by the khmer rouge. it was from this place that prisoners were taken to the different killing fields and executed. only 7 people who entered S21 survived. it was a dark and sobering experience, comparable to our visit to dachau in munich. what was painful to learn is that many of the leaders of the khmer rouge were able to live out their lives and die in peace without facing trial as it took ages to put together a tribunal (until the UN acknowledged the genocide). heartbreaking.
